Operating from six sites within the UK, Norco has established itself as a leading developer of innovative plastic mouldings and lightweight composite structures, working alongside major construction companies, the defence sector and marine industry, including serving as chief mould maker for Sunseeker luxury yachts.

Challenge

The high ceilings across all of Norco’s 80,000 ft2 production facilities in Poole, Dorset, led to severe stratification issues, as the heat from the HVAC system was immediately rising to the ceiling and being lost through the roof.

Despite the heating system running continuously, which incurred high energy costs, it was still unable to reach comfortable conditions at floor level. The imbalance in temperatures was also resulting in condensation issues, hot and cold spots and a high carbon footprint.

Solution

After carrying out a free site survey a series of Airius model 25 Standard Series destratification fans were specified to recirculate the heated air from the ceiling back to the floor.

Taking advantage of Airius’ full turn-key solution, which provides a completely managed, stress free, design, supply and installation service, the system was fitted within a week with minimal disruption to Norco’s operations.

Solution

The London Aquatics Centre is a world-class swimming and diving venue based at Queen Elizabeth Park, host to the 2012 Olympic Games. The Centre features a 50 metre competition pool, 50 metre training pool and 10 metre high diving pool with the capacity to hold up to 2,800 spectators.

Challenge

As with most pools and sports buildings, heat supplied from HVAC systems was rising up to the high ceilings, away from swimmers and spectators in the zone of occupancy at floor level. The Kingdom Shopping Centre is one of the largest single-level indoor shopping centres in Scotland with around 40,000m2 of floorspace.

The centre contains over 100 retail units, featuring brands including Argos, Boots, Sports Direct, Iceland, JD Sports and New Look, as well as a variety of cafés, the town’s central library and theatre/civic centre.

Challenge

Retailers made requests to the shopping centre to improve heating levels, as units were uncomfortably cold despite the high heating bills. The centre is heated by 20 gas fired air handling units, set to run daily from 8am to 5pm. So, Kingdom set out to find a solution that would not only improve heating comfort, but also conserve energy.

Solution

Airius worked with Kingdom Shopping Centre to design and install a series of 26 Airius Destratification fans throughout the Centre, including its 2 squares, central walkway, theatre and library. Installation was completed out of hours to avoid any disruption to normal opening hours. Gym environments, where groups of people are in close proximity, equipment is shared between numerous people and heavy breathing takes place as a result of aerobic exercise, present a high-risk environment for the transmission of COVID19. Norwich Can Manufacturing – Destratification Fan Systems

Impress installed 34 Airius fan units into their factory to save on heating costs and their investment was repaid 3 times over in the first winter they were installed.

Oil prices dropped by an average of 9.5% in 08/09 compared to the previous winter period 07/08. This will enhance the actual savings.

YMCA Warwick located in southwest QLD and provides a facility for a range of indoor sports.

Their facility covers two basketball courts and surrounds and is 10 metres high and approximately 1,100 sq. metres in overall size.

It is used by both the YMCA and assorted associations and groups for a range of sports.

YMCA had considered the use of large bladed fans however the Airius option offered the best price without the expense of running three phase power or relocating the lighting. Plus, the client was concerned at the damage balls etc. can make to large bladed fans, as well as the required annual maintenance costs HVLS large bladed fans require.

As assorted other YMCA facilities around Australia use Airius fans for cooling, David Jordan, the facility manager, approached Airius for a cooling solution in his facility using their unique fans.

After a review of the supplied floor plans and photos, Airius recommended the installation of 8 x Airius Sapphire Series fans, suspended just off the ceiling and evenly spaced around the facility.

These fans work together as a system and push out massive volumes of air. They have a thrust rating of 14.32 Newtons and a C/L velocity at 10 metres of 2.89 m/s.

YMCA accepted the Airius proposal adding to the scores of facilities around Australasia and Asia now using the Airius Sapphire Series fans for cooling their large spaces. Their ease of install, and unobtrusiveness, coupled with all their other benefits (compared to every alternative fan type) made the decision easy.

Lush Retail Ltd

Poole Manufacturing Site – Destratification Fan Systems

Lush Retail Ltd needed to improve internal conditions at their Hatch Pond Road factory facility in Poole, Dorset. Temperatures at floor level were uncomfortably cold as their heating system was unable to reach acceptable conditions. This also incurred high energy costs as the heating system was running constantly in an attempt to reach set parameters.

Following installation of the Airius system heating costs for the site were reduced by over 60%. Lush are now installing the Airius system throughout the rest of their factory facilities.

Consumption Data Analysis

Usagefor November and December 2012 calculated by dividing the COST by the average amount per unit throughout the year. COST for March 2013 calculated by multiplying units used by average amount per unit throughout the year. 20% of consumption allowed for heating the offices and hot water.

Gas used for production processes approx. £220 per month. Calculated from average amount used throughout June, July & August when the heating is off. This has been subtracted to leave only heating gas.

A drop in temperature of one 1ºC increases a buildings heat load by 8% to 12%, mainly depending on the base temperature and the building fabric. With the low level of insulation at the Lush Hatchpond Road facility calculations are based on a very conservative 11% per 1ºC. The overall adjustment for the temperature difference works out as a 16.33% increase to the pre Airius figures.

All the final outcomes are shown in the data above including; WITHOUT weather effects taken into account, WITH weather effects taken into account and an AVERAGE of the both.

The Airius units in the Hatchpond road site have far exceeded predicted savings. This is mainly due to the buildings extremely low level of insulation and the high level of process heat within the environment, which when recirculated provides a free source of space heating.

Pharmaceutical Warehouse – Destratification Fan Systems

The accompanying thermal images were developed from the temperature controlled warehouse of a major pharmaceuical company. The company’s new 50,000 sq t. warehouse facility in Louisville, KY did not pass the Food and Drug Administraion’s required Temperature Validaion Tests with the originally designed HVAC system.

As can be seen in the ‘Before Airius’ image without Airius fans, the top levels of the pallet racking were exposed to 22.5°C air, too high a temperature for the inventory.

This was a major problem; the facility was due to open and the space was badly needed. The HVAC contractor had tried everything they could think of and had no answers for the problem, short of staring over with a re-designed system. A senior facility engineer suggested the use of Airius for this application. The HVAC Contractor was very sceptical the devices could raise the cold air levels and maintain them. Airius personnel were called in to review the situation and it was determined for this large application that 50 Airius model 25 destratificaion fans would be required and were air freighted at the customer’s request within 2 days.

The facility quickly agreed and the installation was a success. In spite of the fact that the destratificaion fans were originally developed to de-straify heated air, and the fact that cold air naturally sinks, it can be seen by comparing the ‘Before Airius’ image to the ‘After Airius’ image that the use of the Airius fans has balanced the level of cooler air in the room to the point where the upper rack levels are no longer in jeopardy – Thermal Equalisation!

Timberline Gardens was an independent, 10 acre garden centre supplying over 2,400 species of plants and perennials. Including both indoor and outdoor growing facilities, award winning Timberline Gardens operated for nearly 20 years, helping owner and Director Kelly Grummons achieve ‘Nursery & Greenhouse Association Person of the Year’ in both 1992 and 2002.

Challenge

During the cold winter season heat was rising and being lost through the greenhouse rooves, resulting in excessively high heating costs. British Airways

Client

British Airways Engineering is the aircraft maintenance subsidiary of British Airways, which provides support services to British Airways and many other airlines. It is responsible for the entire BA Boeing 747-400 fleet maintenance, cabin interior conversions and general ramp maintenance work for both their own fleet and other airlines.

Challenge

With the typical high ceiling in British Airway’s East Penn maintenance hangar at Heathrow Airport, the expensively heated air was immediately rising to the ceiling and gathering where it was not required. This in turn increased the temperature difference from inside to outside, resulting in accelerated heat loss, increasing heating costs and an uncomfortably cold environment for employees.

Trinity Grammar School

Low Cost Sports Hall Cooling – Airius Airflow Circulation Cooling Fans

Trinity Grammar in Sydney wanted to fix the overheating in their sport hall across the summer period. Viewing crowds and players suffered from overheating in the thirty-year-old hall.

The hall contains two basketball courts and as well as rows of upper level bleachers.

Trinity had considered air conditioning but the extremely high purchase and running cost was out of reach. Then they considered large bladed fans but found them too imposing and also very expensive. The layout of the roof structure also meant that large bladed HVLS fans would have to project significantly down into the playing area, creating a range of other issues.

After hearing about the efficiency and simplicity of the Airius fan solution, the school’s Facility Manager, Ben Morrisey, contacted Airius to provide a simple cooling solution.

He advised that ‘the heat in the gym was very unbearable in summer for students PE, volleyball, basketball and the other indoor sports we play.’  They really wanted air movement and the cooling effect that will bring. 

The building is approximately 9.5 metres high and is around 1,000 sq. metres in size. On the upper floor five rows of bleachers are located to look down upon the courts. The school received regular complaints from the viewers seated on the bleachers, that is was also overly warm and uncomfortable up there too.

The School installed 8 x Airius model 60 EC fans in the sports hall, suspended off the roof, (controlled by two Airius potentiometer speed controllers) hidden away above the roof beams and 5 x Airius 20EC Standard Retail Series fans (controlled by one Airius potentiometer speed controller) laterally located above the bleachers to push the air along the seating zone.

Acton Rail Maintenance – Destratification Fan Systems

Siemens Transportation Systems Ltd. contacted Airius to address the high energy costs in their Acton Rail Maintenance Shed, which was unable to reach acceptable comfort levels for staff despite the heating running continuously.

For the aisles, the units were mounted horizontally just above head height and pointed to blow directly down between the product storage racks.

As a bonus, the units are adjustable in any direction to enable the customer to direct the air flow to where it may be required.

At 7-10 metres high these unobtrusive and quiet units provide a large amount of air flow all across the space with full controllability offered in five settings from 0-100%.

British Telecom

Doncaster Call Centre – Destratification Fan Systems

BT installed 64 Airius model 45 fan units into their Doncaster call centre to improve comfort levels, increase staff productivity and save on energy costs. This performance report shows that with the Airius destratificaion system temperatures are an average of 2.9°C higher at floor level, compared to the HVAC system working alone.

This is achieved by recirculating the warm air that accumulates at ceiling level above the HVAC air intake. This will also reduce the buildings overall heat ol ss.

The results of this tell us that the thermostat can now be reduced by approximately 3°C to achieve the originally set conditions, thus reducing overall energy consumption and carbon emissions.

Morrisons

Mitton Mechanical approached Airius in 2007 to conduct a trial in the Morrisons Knottingley store.

The trial was hugely successful and now 100’s of stores all across the country have been retrofitted with the Airius system.

Supermarket operators and HVAC consultants have been trying to resolve the problem of customer discomfort in cold chiller and freezer aisles for many years. This problem is compounded when temperatures throughout the rest of the store can be uncomfortably warm in comparison. Costly and inefficient ducting systems, under cabinet heaters and heat retrieval systems have failed to solve the problem to date.

Mitton Mechanical, a Morrisons contractor, approached Airius to conduct a trial in the Morrisons Knottingley store in Wakefield. Airius units were placed at 4 metre intervals in three chiller aisles, reducing stratification from 6-8ºC to 1-2ºC, thus making the chiller aisles more comfortable (without affecting the chiller units). This increased customer browse time and aisle spend, as comfortable shoppers browse for longer and spend more. The system also helps dry spills quickly through evaporation and eliminates glass “fogging”, keeping cabinet products clearly on display.

The trial was hugely successful and over 400 Morrisons stores have now been retrofitted with the Airius units. The Airius system is now on the standard specification list for all new Morrisons stores and will be retrofitted as part of the normal refurbishment program.

Ramada Inn – Destratification Fan Systems

During the summer months temperatures in Northern Queensland can hit highs of 35°C and humidity can rise to as much as 80%. This can have negative consequences on most building environments, especially those with little or no airflow circulation. Even those with a designed or ad hoc cooling solution can fail to achieve sufficient levels of cooling in these conditions.

This was the situation the Management at The Ramada Hotel Port Douglas found themselves in. In an attempt to resolve the severe over-heating issue the hotel was experiencing in its Reception area the Hotel had installed paddle fans above the counters.

Not only did the paddle fans prove ineffective at providing cooling or circulating sufficient airflow during extreme temperatures, but even during average conditions they were not providing any benefit.

Following discussion with the team at Airius the Hotel Management agreed to trial a single Airius Narrow Aisle unit behind the counter to see if Airius could resolve their over-heating problem.

The trial was such a success that within a week the Hotel had ordered another 4 Narrow Aisle units to install in their Reception area.

The units were installed within only a few hours, positioned above each work station along the counter. Each unit was then angled to supply airflow and cooling direct to both staff and customer when at the Reception Counter, providing the much needed and long awaited relief the Hotel has been looking for.

Destratification Fan Systems

Howard Gumbley, General Manager at Hilton Brown’s Pools contacted Airius to address severe condensation problems in two of their swimming pool facilities in Albany and Havelock North.

At their Havelock North site condensation was impacting on the main pool area, whereas at their Albany pool condensation was causing problems in the main pool and changing rooms.

Both building interiors were constantly damp, benches were wet and water would drip on spectators, especially on cold days. Anything metal or mechanical was particularly affected; locks and automatic doors were jamming and rust was uncontrollable, even on galvanised metal. Being constantly damp, the concrete walls became discoloured and paint deteriorated rapidly. Mould and unpleasant odours were also large problem.

For the Albany pool, which measured approximately 20 metres by 12 metres, the Airius Standard Series model 60 was specified. In the changing room the smaller Standard Series model 15 was recommended.

“Within hours we noticed a difference. Two days later the entire space was a lot drier, with less damp odour. We had spent vast sums of money installing mechanical air handling units and ducting systems in this space, but there were still areas where instructors and customers found it very humid.

“Air quality dramatically improved. The glass viewing wall was constantly fogged up prior to installation. Within a day there was virtually no condensation on the glass and the concrete area around the pool dries out much faster than it did before the units were installed.

The Havelock North pool, due to its sloped roof, required Standard Series model 25 and 15 units, to account for the variation in height. At its highest point the ceiling was 4.8 metres and the pool measured 24 metres long by 14 metres wide.

After installation both sites virtually eliminated all condensation. Any signs of damp quickly subsided and surfaces dried much faster. Even the concrete, which had become saturated and discoloured, dried out. Comfort levels vastly improved and within only two days the unpleasant odours were almost non-existent.

Fresher Air Saves Time

Usually fruit and vegetables are stored in cold rooms overnight and replaced the next morning in Danish grocery stores, due to poor air quality in the store rooms. But, with Airius PureAir fans this is no longer necessary. Volkswagen Showroom – Destratification Fan System

Under normal winter heating conditions the temperature in the Volkswagen showroom at high level was measured at 32ºC and at low level 18ºC.

This stratification effect can be seen in this illustration and is very common in buildings of this nature.

Newmarket Motors needed to resolve the uncomfortably high temperatures experienced on their first floor and the uncomfortably low temperatures found on their ground floor, which were creating unsuitable conditions for their staff to work in.

Foodies Market – Destratification Fan System

Foodie’s first installed 8 Model 15 Airius fans in its 745m² store in South Boston. Managers were so pleased with how the destratification fans warmed up the store for both employees and customers that they installed another system of 7 Model 15 fans at their store in Duxbury.

“Before the Airius fans were installed at the Boston store, employees, especially checkout clerks near the store entrance, complained about being cold,” said Michael Stameris, Facilities & Operations Manager for Foodie’s.

“After the fans were installed on each side of the checkout lane and throughout the store, clerks told managers they now were too warm!” Stameris explained. “I lowered the temperature in the store. But on the next day, they said they were still hot, so
I lowered the temperature a second time.”

Another factor that led Foodie’s to the Airius system was the fan’s low use of electricity and easy plug-and-play installation. “These fans really use a small amount of current,” Stameris said.

Store managers, using a thermal scanner, could easily see the temperature difference between the hotter ceiling area and the store’s cooler floor. “With the recent cold winters some customers also complain about being chilly,” Stameris said.

With ceilings of about 4 metres in South Boston and a range from 3.5 to 5 metres at the Duxbury location, the Airius Model 15 has worked well at circulating hotter air to the floor.

Foodie’s also installed fans above its open case frozen food aisles, where managers believed that cold air was spilling out.

“We were pleased to find that the column of air is so pinpoint to the floor that we could install the fans less than a metre off the centre of the open cases,” Stameris said. “It’s very precise.”

At Foodie’s Duxbury store, one manager’s office is located on an elevated mezzanine area. “That office area was often too warm, while employees on the floor below the mezzanine were too cold”, Stameris said.

Three fans were installed along the ceiling in the elevated area, to draw the excess heat from the high level office area and recirculate it down to the floor below to solve the problem.

“Groceries, with frozen food aisles, open refrigerated cases and entrances frequently opening and closing for shoppers, make it tough for managers to keep thermostats at their set points and are an anomaly when it comes to keeping temperatures balanced. But the Airius system has helped us do just that, saving a lot of money” Stameris said.

Springfield School

Library Cooling – Airius Airflow Circulation Cooling Systems For Extremely Hot Climates

Springfield Central State High School is an Independent Public School (IPS) with students from years 7 to 12. It is located out towards Ipswich, west of Brisbane.

It is a relatively new school with the library around 3 years old.  The library staff and students complained about the overheating in the space during summer. There were large extraction fans installed that proved very ineffective and noisy.

The school had looked at the typical solutions including air conditioning and HVLS fans. Neither of these options were either cost effective or visually suitable. They required a low cost, unobtrusive, aesthetic and quiet solution.

Airius provided a complete design, supply and install solution. 

After much consideration, the school proceeded with the Airius solution.   The results speak for themselves.

The installation looks great, offers excellent, controllable and cooling air movement throughout the space and is very quiet.

St. Thomas Aquinas School in Bowral has installed 8 Airius thermal equalisers to serve a newly constructed school hall with a ceiling peak of 6.7m.

As part of the BER schools project, Martin O’Toole Architects chose the Airius system as advised by sustainable consultants from Vento and Vim Sustainability.

The technology was chosen as a cost-effective solution to ensure that the building reduced its heating bills and carbon emissions.

Andrew Lowden, the project architect said, “The Airius thermal equalisers are a great asset to the school hall. The main benefits for the client include improved air circulation, a balance of temperature throughout the building, low running costs, silent operation and easy installation – all at a highly affordable price.”

Andrew underwent a site visit to test the units in 2011, when outdoor temperatures in Bowral did not exceed 12⁰C.

“The hall’s gas heating system warms the hall effectively within 15 minutes. However, to maintain this temperature for long periods of time would be cost prohibitive to the school. This is where the Airius units come into play. Once the hall is occupied, the gas heaters are turned off, leaving the Airius units running to circulate the warm air. When the Airius system was turned on, a constant temperature between 18-20⁰C was maintained for a period of time” he says.

James Idle, the Senior Design Engineer at Vento had designed the destratification solution to ensure that the warm air generated by the gas heaters would be distributed evenly throughout the building. “The aim of the Airius system design was to reduce the workload on the existing HVAC system, allowing the end user to save on their gas bill”.

Andrew confirms that his client was on a tight design budget, however the Airius units were highly affordable, and gave an attractive payback period and cost savings against the school’s existing gas and heating bills. “I would highly recommend the Airius solution for my future projects.

Showroom HVAC Optimisation – Improving Cooling In Summer & Heating In Winter With Airius

Toyota Kilmore is a new architecturally designed car showroom located in the region just north of Melbourne. The area suffers from very hot summers and very cold winters. 

After seeing the units in operation at a large retailer in Melbourne, Graeme approached Airius to provide an air circulation and destratification fan solution for his Showroom facility, to improve the efficiency of his air conditioning system in both summer and winter, while also optimising the thermal comfort of his customers.

The facility is around 500 sq. metres in size and approximately 6.5 metres high.

Graeme wanted the unique look of the latest Airius units and he opted for the recently released Retail Series to be installed at his Showroom in Kilmore in late 2015.

These aesthetic, high performing, very quiet units, primarily designed for a broad range of retail applications, offer a unique solution without the constraints of other types of fans and suit the facility very well.

In summer, the higher speed circulation capability offers cooling on its own or optimises the performance of the air conditioning system.

Challenge

After a number of consecutive hot Summer seasons, The Boathouse Tavern reached out to Airius to advise on a cost effective cooling solution to keep their customers cool in high Summer temperatures. In the Winter the tall ceiling above their internal boat attraction would also act like a heat sink, drawing warm temperatures away from the floor.

Solution

Basketball Court Cooling – Airius Airflow Circulation Cooling System Resolves Severe Summer Overheating

School and community sports centres are large spaces and in the Australian climate often have issues with overheating in summer.

Current solutions are limited to:

  • – Air Conditioning – high capital expense and running costs
  • – Large blade fans – expensive installation, aesthetics, structural issues, height restrictions, risk of damage from users, light strobing

The use of air movement for cooling by moving the air across the skin and causing evaporation has been used for centuries in all sorts of tropical and temperate climates.  It is a cost-effective solution to the overheating problem.

In 2015, St. Stephen’s College’s Director of Sport, Rob Seib, approached Airius to provide a proposal to supply an Airius cooling solution as an alternative to large bladed fans.

The two basketball courts were in a relatively new building with high roofs around 10 metres high and around 1400 sq metres in size. Located in a sub-tropical climate, high summer and moderate winter temperatures combined with high humidity are typical for the area.

The building design has limited capacity for cross flow ventilation and suffered from severe overheating in spring and summer. The building is used for both sports and classes and the overheating impacted negatively on both sports performance and learning outcomes.

Airius supplied 12 x Model 60 Airius Standard Series units with two 5 Amp speed controllers, for an installed cost of around 15% cheaper and with greater floor coverage than the alternative large bladed fans.

As a bonus the units are very quiet and are adjustable in any direction to enable the customer to direct the air flow to where it may be required.

Poultry Sheds

WHY DESTRATIFICATION?

In the case of poultry rearing sheds, particularly those using gas heating, thermal stratification has a very costly impact.

As hot air rises the roof accumulates the heat first, followed by the main cavity of the building before finally reaching the floor.

As the birds are grown at floor level most this heat is wasted, heating the higher levels of the building before finally reaching the area where the birds reside.

Poultry Sheds – Destratification Fan Systems

Through the implementation of a destratification system, hot air in the roof is recirculated down to the floor continuously. In this manner, the cleaner, hotter air in the roof is recovered and redistributed to where it is needed at floor level.

This leads to a significant reduction in gas consumption, the greatest non feed expense in rearing birds.
